Fly like a Pig!

Cincinnati Well, I always said I would run a marathon before I was 50. In fact, for years and years I have said that I would be at my most powerful on my 50th birthday. It's easy to say that when your 50th is, say, 30 years away, and less easy when it is just beyond the snack food aisle.

Turns out, I have exactly 241 days to get powerful and marathonish. In celebration of my 50th birthday on August 16, 2009 (the 32nd anniversary of Elvis' death by the way), and with the understanding that continual learning keeps you youngish, I am devising a list of 50 things to learn at 50. Not all of them are big things–some are as simple as learning to fold a paper origami crane or knit a scarf or make palak paneer. I'd love your suggestions for things to add to the list. Better yet, things you can teach me to do in a short video, in case others want to learn the same thing! Other items on the list are more involved, like learn Spanish and sign language. And some involve a physical challenge, including to "lose 50 at 50" (well, there, I said it, out loud in front of god and everyone) and learn how to train for a marathon.

To get started on those last two, Emma and I are training to walk/run/crawl (whatever works) for the May 3, 2009, half-marathon in Cincinnati, the famous Flying Pig Marathon. As someone noted, we are actually running a Mara (half-a-marathon, get it?). And so, I'm inviting you to train with us and come to Cincinnati with us and/or train for an event in your neck of the woods. I just recently flew over Cincinnati and took photos to prove to you how flat the city is. See photo. Really. It's a marathon course that is friendly to those of us who are not Olympic runners, and even to those of us who, like me, will likely walk at least part or three-fourths of the course, panting and cursing the whole way.

Emma is going to design a 37days/LIAV Team t-shirt for those who sign up for the challenge, and for those who simply want to cheer us on (cheering is good). I'll post the design and info on ordering in January.

In the meantime, the Flying Pig people need to know if you are coming, so go here for info and to enlist in the marathon, if you are so inclined. You don't want to get closed out if the race fills up, now do you? And forfeit all those hours of sweating? Leave a comment to let me know you're registered on their official site. There are four intrepid humans in the group so far! We're staying in the Millennium Hotel (first hotel they list) and will arrange for a victory dinner somewhere in Cincinnati the evening after we have conquered the Mara and just before we go to the hospital, so plan to stay over on Sunday night if you can!

More details will be coming in the next few weeks! Until then, walk as much as you can. And dream of flying pigs.

    HaHa! Funny yet informative post!

I like it when you write.

I will be one state over doing the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia that morning! (And I too need some serious training. It’s a 10-miler and it sounds wimpy compared to your Mara, but it will be the longest I have ever run!)

I’ll be a part of team LIAV in spirit!

  • I would like to learn how to make the perfect loaf of bread. Just like my grandma used to make.

A mara, huh? As long as you don’t do a typo when you go to run the thon and make it a thong. Heh.

ummm… I have an aversion to pain and sweat. And pain and sweat in the same moment is likely to send me into prematurely grey hair…. ha!

But, I will be 50 on 5/5 (a whole country celebrates with me! woohoo!) and so I will contemplate the 50 50 challenge because it has too many fives not to be auspicious. And I need to get off my butt and get in gear. So starting today because we have to start small when we abhor sweat and have bad knees, I shall do 50 extra stairsteps for five days, and then I shall add 5 more. Days or steps, I’m not sure yet.

Thanks for the jumpstart! I’ll be thinking of you and pulling for you and Emma and I’ll even make a video of how to carve a flying pig stamp for you! Howzat?

  • I will bring you an official queenmaxine learn to knit knit and spare you some knitting mojo at the retreat in April. I am so excited!

  • I ran the Flying Pig Marathon this year! It was my very first marathon at age 39. I finished in about 5:24, so I am certainly not fast by any means, but it was absolutely worth it to run this race!!

I think you will be SO happy that you picked this race! I loved it!!! The crowd support was amazing, even for a late finisher like me. My favorite part was high-fiving the Pig at the “Finish Swine.”

Unfortunately, I can’t run it this year, but I will be there with you in spirit. Good luck with the training, and enjoy the experience!!!

  • I love the composition of your photograph of the City of Double Cin. I have flown into Cincinnati more than any other city. This is the first I have seen this view captured this way.

  • Here Patti, it is possible that you have heard this poem before, but here is are links to when I had to use it to get ready for 13.1 miles:

Then again for my recent 26.2:

And here is something that should make everyone want to train and complete an event like a mara. This video is a 7 minutes well-spent:

I really hope I can pull off being part of team LIAV!

  • Hi Patti–If you really want to learn to knit–I will teach you–next time you come to Portland!! just e-mail me… Happy Holidays! (I moved to Portland about 10 days ago)

Patti, once you learn how to make that oragami crane with paper then try it with won ton wrappers and deep fry them. They are lots of fun! Go to the Evil Mad Scientist Lab for photo and instructions. I must confess I opted for making swans because they are much easier than the cranes. http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/EdibleOrigami

  • Well you need to get your tattoo for one more thing.

And while I won’t run a marathon for a whole bunch of reasons main one being I loathe running.

I am at 46 the strongest I have ever been in my life — so you can do it at 50. YOU CAN…I will be rooting you on.

    Go Patti GO!

Patti, you are – as always – an inspiration. If only my knees agreed.
(Did you know you fail to inspire my knees? I’ll bet not.)

But since I’m marking a half-century myself exactly 11 days before you, I’d better get cracking at something that fits the bill. So I pledge to make my list…. (Hope that’s not too much like pledging to pledge….) but seriously, I pledge to make my list of explicit intentions. Eat chocolate in Switzerland; photograph tulips in Holland; experience my first river boat trip; dance in a Love Train….

Thank you for the inspiration and for always making me smile. xo

  • I signed up today after much consideration. I start training in Jan, because that is how long it takes me to train for anything-:) Consider me part of your team, please.

  • Lisa

I just did one of the most spontaneous things of my life — registered for the Flying Pig and committed to training for it (the first half marathon of my life!) Looking forward to training with you and seeing you in Cincinnati!

  • Patti, I am prudent enough to know that running (even walking, when done with serious intent and for hours) is a bit past where I am in the whole, physical-fitness range of allowed activity.

I’m more of the, “Dear, would you please change the channel, as I seemed to have pulled a clicker muscle?” sort.

But none of those limitations will prevent my supporting the LIAV team in this endeavor! I’ll order my shirt just as soon as you confirm that there will be an XXL size available. I’ll wear my shirt with pride on May 3rd and anticipate the many stories of pain, suffering, and eventual triumph!

  • I will be with you in spirit. May the roads and trails be kind to you as you prepare!

If you need some running tips and advice you can check out the podcast at Passionate Runner. I know the voice behind that very well. :-)

  • guess which Donna

Dear Patti…wishing you all the best as you live your 49th year to the fullest. Before you’re 50 or just a matter of minutes or hours after you’re fifty, it might be fun to invite some friends to meet you for a movie. You will be sure to feel good having them all sit around you in the theatre. There will be smiles and you will be warm even if it is August and the theatre is air conditioned. Happy 49th Winter Solstice, Donna

    Patti…

You may enjoy learning to develop film as one of your fifty things. You don’t need a darkroom, and black and white is simple (and more cool.)

You can have prints made at Giganta-Mart, or make contact prints on your own (fifty-one.)

    Patti,
I am going to fly with the pigs (I am hoping that’s not like swim with the fishes). I am so excited. Every year I paint 3 dream rocks for the next year. They are magic and come true…probably because I’ve made my wishes tangible. One of them says walk in pink pig letters…and I’ve just registered to walk in the flying pig half marathon and I would love to be part of your LIAV team.
    I’m so excited!!!

    Patti,
So I am a bit behind on reading but I live in N Ky. I don’t know if I can get into enough shape to do it but I may give it a try.
Please tell me you have been here before because if you haven’t then make sure you train on an incline because Cincy is also known as 7 hills but there are actually more like 15!!!!

  • This post has inspired me to run a half marathon. Unfortunately, I can’t do the one in Ohio. I have a baseline of running and this idea was exactly what I needed. It is big and scary and something I will do on my own. Thanks for sharing that idea.
