Need help in NYC…

NYC I'm very excited to be coming to New York in February to attend the Books for a Better Life Awards ceremony. Life is a Verb is one of five finalists, out of 450 nominees, in the "Inspirational Memoir" category and the winner will be announced on February 23rd. It's up against some stiff competition including Randy Pausch's bestseller, The Last Lecture. I'm honored to be in that group.

I can't go. I don't have a thing to wear.

I'll be winging my way there straight from a speech in Miami that morning and meeting my dear Emma in New York for the big event. It seems fitting to take with me the very human for whom the book was written, don't you think? (Along with her sister, Tess, of course, who will remain home much to her chagrin). We'll stay at my favorite hotel in New York, the Roger Smith, for two nights–and see as much of New York as we can in one day before we go broke!

I'd love to do a book event while there. I can ask the publisher to query bookshops, but also wanted to put the question out to 37days readers because you are the very best people in the world: is there anyone who would like to help arrange a book event for your school, church, women's group, book group, 4-H club on February 24th? If so, let's talk…

As for the rest of you, please plan to modazz good fun for February 23rd for me and Emma. Perhaps she'll wear her prom dress and twirl a lot just for the sheer joy of it. She says adamantly that she needs to take me shopping. I don't know what she means by that.

  • Well, like I told you, the 24th is my grandmother’s birthday so I’m not really free that evening. But would you like to meet up for lunch or tea that afternoon?

  • Patti,

The best bookstore in NYC is called Housing Works Used Book Cafe and they have the very best readings all the time. I think you should book an event there. Here’s their website: http://housingworksubc.com/

I used to volunteer there and I have fantastic memories from it. I only wish I could be there myself to hear you speak.

    Hi Patti,

My brother in law is a publisher at Doubleday in NY.
I could ask him to recommend some cool bookstore if you’d like.

I live in Hunterdon County, NJ. There’s a neat bookstore in my town, Clinton, NJ. I’d love to have you out here, but my sense is that you want to stay in NYC.

    LMK,
    Valli

  • Oh, Patti! Good luck with the award! And you and Emma both twirl down Fifth Avenue…just because.

    What fun!!

    Hi Patti,

My stomping grounds … let me pass the news around & see what might happen — I think there are some possibilities. Also, remember that the 24th is Mardi Gras (says the woman who has found her 2009 calendar).
I also like the Housing Works idea.

I’m sorry that I will most likely miss being in NY for the event as I will be there the following weekend for a wedding.

  • Valli – I’m in Warren County, even further than you, but I’d love a NJ event!

(I’ll come into Manhattan if I need to though!)

congratulations on being a finalist for this award– how cool is that?! best of luck and wish i could be there. NYC is one of my favorite places! XOXOX

Congratulations, Patti. You really deserve this honor for all the good, light, and positivity that you bring to the world! =)

  • Housing Works is a great idea. So is Bluestockings (not that far away from Housing Works).

  • What a wonderful honor and 100% deserved! Has anyone mentioned the Strand Bookstore down near Union Square? It’s a fantastic, jam-packed old-and-new together hive of intellectual fun. And just under OmYoga, where my friend Sarah works. Take her class for the best stretch after a flight I’ve ever found. Or maybe a gathering right there? Omyoga sells books too!http://www.strandbooks.com/

  • Thanks to everyone for your fabulous comments! Have asked the publisher to inquire with Housing Works (love their website and story) and will let you know!

OmYoga sounds like fun, too… I think a class is in order…

Perhaps a reading in New Jersey is possible on February 25th on the way home… let’s plot and plan!

How about a lunch in NYC on the 24th for those who can’t come to the reading (Danielle?)

  • Can’t wait to see what outfit (and shoes) you pick out…take photos! And Congrats on being a finalist. You have my vote!! (what? I don’t get to vote??)

  • Hold on there, cowgirl. Don’t you remember that YOU are finding my outfit and definitely my SHOES for this event? ;-)

Wherever you end up, Patti, I’m coming to meet you, so beware! Are you set on doing the event in NYC or would you come out to Montclair? We have a great independent book store called Washington Booksellers and I could query them…

    Sally

  • I love this site to look at all the shoe possibilities: http://www.modista.com/
    I’m thinking red….

  • Lunch on the 24th sounds perfect! Let’s figure out details over email or facebook.

  • Elisabeth

Oh I don’t think i’ll be in NYC then but if I am I will definitely work on SOMETHING for you. Well I will work on something anyway!

(p.s. and if i’m not here, i’ll be in Paris. Come to Paris and read at WH Smith on Rue du Rivoli or Shakespeare & Company!)
